The Romanian driving theory test, in English.
If you are not a Romanian citizen, you can sit the DGPCI theory exam in English. The official practice questions, though, are published in Romanian only. LaPermis.ro has translated the whole category B bank — 1,208 questions — with the same answers and pictures, an explanation for every question, and a mock exam in the real format.

Taking the theory exam in English
Who can choose English
Foreign nationals and citizens of other EU or EEA countries or of Switzerland can ask for the theory exam in English, French or German. You tick the language on the exam application form.
Romanian citizens take it in Romanian, or in Hungarian or German if that is their mother tongue.
Source: MAI Order 268/2010, annex 1 (the exam application form).
Our English is not the exam's English
DGPCI publishes its practice questions in Romanian only. The English you will read in the exam room is DGPCI's own translation, which is not public. Ours is a careful translation of the official Romanian bank: the same questions, answers, pictures and numbers.
So learn the rule, not the wording. Each question has an explanation, and you can switch the test to the Romanian original whenever a sentence needs checking.
The exam itself is the same in every language. For category B it is a computer test of 26 questions in 30 minutes, taken at the public driving-licence service (DGPCI, formerly DRPCIV). Each question has three options, and one, two or all three can be correct. You pass with 22 correct answers, so you can make at most 4 mistakes.
Exam format: MAI Order 268/2010, art. 10(2).

Questions
The theory test in English, answered
Who can take it in English, how the test works, and how LaPermis.ro helps you prepare.
Can I take the Romanian driving theory test in English?
Yes, if you are a foreign national or a citizen of another EU or EEA country or of Switzerland. You ask for English (or French or German) on the exam application form, annex 1 to MAI Order 268/2010. Romanian citizens take the test in Romanian, or in Hungarian or German if that is their mother tongue as members of a national minority.
Is the English on LaPermis.ro the same as in the exam?
Not word for word. DGPCI publishes its practice questions in Romanian only; the English version of the exam is its own translation, shown only in the exam room. Our English questions are our translation of the official Romanian bank: the same questions, answers, pictures and numbering, with the explanation translated too. The rules behind the wording do not change, and you can switch the test to the Romanian original at any time.
How many questions does the category B theory test have?
The DGPCI test for category B has 26 multiple-choice questions drawn at random from the official bank. Each question has three options, and one, two or all three can be correct: you score the question only if you tick every correct option and nothing else. You have 30 minutes and pass with 22 correct answers, so at most 4 mistakes; the fifth mistake ends the test as failed. The format is set by MAI Order 268/2010, art. 10. The mock exam on LaPermis.ro follows it exactly.
Is the theory test hard?
More than half of the sittings fail. In 2025 there were 680,300 theory exams and 362,557 ended in "failed", according to DGPCI's report for 2025. Priority at intersections, sanctions and overtaking are rules full of numbers and exceptions that blur under time pressure. Practising in the real format and repeating your mistakes until they stop is what makes the difference.
Which categories are in English?
Category B (cars): the whole bank, in English. Category A (motorcycles) is available in Romanian only for now. There are no question sets yet for categories C, D, E or for getting a licence back after it was cancelled.
How much does LaPermis.ro cost?
You start free: during the trial everything is unlimited, and after it you can keep practising free with a daily question limit. Unlimited access is a one-time payment of 25 lei: not a subscription, nothing renews, and there are no ads. One mock exam can be taken once without an account.
DGPCI or DRPCIV: which is it?
The same institution: the Directorate General for Driving Licences and Registrations (DGPCI) of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, formerly called DRPCIV. Many schools and sites still say "DRPCIV questions"; it is the same exam and the same question bank. LaPermis.ro is an independent study service, not affiliated with DGPCI or the Ministry.
Can I practise on my phone?
Yes. LaPermis.ro runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers, and your progress follows your account from one device to another.
